Period Pain, Irregular Cycles and What Chinese Medicine Sees Behind Them
Many of the women I see carry a lot. Careers, travel and adventures in their twenties, then often a family to look after. That's a lot for one body to hold, and stress usually finds a way to show up. For many women, one of the first places it shows up is their period.
Painful periods, cycles that come early or late, or a flow that changes from month to month are concerns I hear often, sometimes as early as the twenties.
HOW CHINESE MEDICINE SEES YOUR CYCLE
More than two thousand years ago, the Huangdi Neijing (黃帝內經) described the monthly cycle as something that depends on the body's deeper reserves. When those reserves mature, it says, "the monthly flow comes on time" (月事以時下).
I like that way of looking at it. A regular, comfortable period is a sign the body has enough to give. When the cycle changes, Chinese medicine asks two questions: is something missing, or is something stuck?
WHAT'S BEHIND PERIOD PAIN AND IRREGULAR CYCLES
The first pattern is not having enough Blood and Qi (氣血). In TCM, Blood is about nourishment, not only what a blood test measures. It can overlap with low iron, which your doctor can check. Periods may come late, be light, or leave you drained.
The second is running low on deeper reserves, which TCM links to the Kidney (腎) and Liver (肝). Years of stress, overwork and too little rest can wear these down, and the cycle is often one of the first things to feel it.
The third, and the one I see most tied to stress, is stuck circulation. In TCM, the Liver keeps Qi and Blood moving smoothly. When stress and emotions build up, that flow gets stuck, and Chinese medicine has a simple saying for what happens next: where there's no flow, there's pain (不通則痛). It's why cramps are often worse in a stressful month.
SO, WHAT CAN HELP?
Because these patterns are different, two women with the same period pain may need very different care. A TCM practitioner looks at the whole picture, including sleep, energy, digestion and stress, and may use acupuncture, herbal formulas and lifestyle guidance to help the body find its rhythm again. Many women also come to us while they're preparing for pregnancy and want to support their body along the way.
If your periods are very heavy, suddenly very painful, stop altogether, or you notice bleeding between periods, please see your doctor first.
